OK, maybe that WAS sacreligious. When I used to commute via bike, it was an early '70s Zeus Criterium, old and used but in perfect mechanical shape (after I rebuilt it). All Zeus components with Alfa centerpull brakes, and sew-up tires with a pre-glued spare tucked under the seat, because I could change a flat sew-up in about a minute and not be late.
Never commuted on my other bikes because I'm afraid of them getting stolen. Lost my first "real" commuter bike, a 1975 Motobecane, in college, and lost a $900 Trek ATB a few years ago, just to remind me that a parked bike isn't safe unless you're actually sitting on it.
Been lucky and haven't lost any motorcycles, though there have been three attempts...
