Pre war Nortons, among others used a vertical Sturmey Archer gearbox. After
the war they started to make their own, called the laydown box because the
shafts were horizontial, with the same gears and shafts. Later this box
mutated into the AMC box used on Norton, Matchless and AJS. The gears and
shafts still interchanged. I built a Triton special with a laydown Norton box
(instead of the more normal Triumph) and 850 Commando internals from the mid
70s, fit, as they will fit a pre war S-A..
