At the bike shop I worked at years ago, we used thin plastic shims to protect the frames when adding etro parts. However, most high-end components are milled with close tolerances so that the use of shims are not possible other than some seatposts or DT shifters and BB clips. Unfortunately you may forced to "grin and clamp it" without the use of shims.
