I use teflon tape, available in most plumbing supply sections of the corner hardware store. Its as thin as anything you'll find. You can wrap it almost anywhere and easily trimm away excess. I usually 'score' the remants with a dull edged plastic spatula and strip the edges away. Most recent application was to wrap the seat-tube of my MASI GC before installing a Campagnolo umbrella clip for the frame pump.

The clamp on item remains stable and the teflon forms a nice buffer between the part and the paint. I'm optomistic that this will also act as a rust inhibitor.
