I was in a shop called Trips For Kids and saw an interesting bike that I told
the owner to offer to the group before he puts it on ebay. It's a 1971 Gitane
Special Team Edition. Similar to a TDF except it has odd geometrically
shaped, semi vertical rear drop outs. Seat tube is 48cm (c to t), top tube is
51. Full set of Jubilee derailleurs, Mafac Competition brakes, Stronglite
Competition cranks (170, 53-42), Lyotard steel rat traps, Super Champion red
label sew up rims, Milremo (Cinelli copy) stem and bars. The headset is
nothing special. This bike looks almost new. There is very little to no wear
on the chainrings, the rear tire may have been replaced, the front may be
original, but is still in good condition. The Reynolds 531 decal (en
francais) has one little blivet in it. The paint and chrome are really nice,
color is dark metallic brown, and the down tube "Gitane" stickers have been
peeled off. I have no connection to the seller, although I did work in the
shop where this bike was bought new, about the time it was sold. I would rate
the bike a "9 to 9+" for originality and condition. The asking price is $500
which seems reasonable, but it's not my size, so it has to sound reasonable
to you. I'll be happy to field questions, otherwise contact Paul at
415-456-5744 or tfkbike@pacbell.net, attn: Paul S. My only interest is seeing
this nearly pristine thing go to a good home. TPS is a charity that provides
trips for (inner) city kids. They also have a swap meet in Marin County
California. The shop is in San Rafael, CA.
