There was an aftermarket 70s part that will look out of place, but works
great called a "brake booster". It's a plate that bolt on to the front of the
brake, making a rigid box of the assembly so the backing plate can't flex.
The only flex that remains in the system is in the cables and the short
section of arm below the pivot. It transforms the brake, and you really only
need to use it on the front. I just loaned the only one I had to a friend to
use on a 60s Frejus.
