Well, speaking of the racing scene in Southern California in the 70s and 80s, very few were racing on Shimano, so we weren't seeing broken Shimano stuff. Guys raced on Campagnolo because the pros raced on it and it was very easy to get replacement parts when you crashed. Neither of which could be said of Shimano at the time.

One serious rider I know, Jobst Brandt, broke Campagnolo cranks, but he also broke Shimano cranks.
