The 1964 Reliable Cycles catalogue shows Magni road and track bikes with Ambrosio adjustable stems as standard equipment.

I think the idea on road bikes was to use the adjustable until you find the exact right position, then at some point you replace the adjustable with the appropriate length stem. Int'l Pro in Bellbrook Ohio used to have a few "loaner" adjustables for this very purpose.

On track bikes, it's nice to be able to adjust extension for different events. Also helps when someone needs to borrow your bike.
