In the discussion so far of QR vs. nuts, one item has been left out, I believe, and it has some relevance. As one member noted, the QR assembly exerts a fair amount of pressure on the assembly. It actually shortens the axle an amount that you can feel. Try this experiment: set up a hub "exactly," with no sideplay and minimal friction. Now, using a couple of wrenches as surrogate fork ends, clamp the skewer. The bearings tighten up. In contrast, with a nutted system, the axle is "stretched" between the nut and the locknut, but the fork doesn't have enough strength to compress the axle between the bearings. So, it is easier to set up nutted wheels. Jim Papadopoulos showed me this years ago.

Now, don't ask me if I think the average mechanic really thought about this in setting up road v. track wheels...
