Subject: [CR]Campy on a half shell: was 120 spacing, old campy hubs

Phil and Ken wrote regarding the shell dimensions of two campy hubs, Ken writing to corroborate Phil. Well, having a long and storied history of being wrong, I went back the my shop room and measured again, taking to heart the old adage 'measure twice, post once'. I fully expected to find the error of my ways and get back on surer footing. The first time I measured, all I did was compare the two hubs, neglecting to write down the dimensions. This time I did. I also went back to my original post and I see that I did not make clear that the hub on the Cinelli right now is a *low* flange hub, and the potential replacement hub is a high flange. I think I did make the latter clear.

Here are fuller descriptions for each:

Campy rear *low* flange hub. No oil hole or clip. Does not say Record. Dated '65' on the lock nuts. Distance from one flange to the other flange: 64mm

Campy rear *high* flange hub. Oil hole clip. Does say Record. One lock nut says 72, the other lock nut says 70. It's hard to say why those differ. I got the hub in the late 1970s when a neighbor was throwing it away. Anyway, the distance from one flange to the other: 55mm (maybe 56).

Sorry to Phil and Ken if the lack of info was misleading. So, maybe the difference is because these are low vs. high flange? Maybe the difference is because the low flange isn't a Record hub? I tried to make sure that I was measuring center to center, and not on an angle. Would the high flange flanges curve in as much as 4mm on each side?

Are there any special problems that I'll have

in building up this hub shell, designed for 124 spacing

but now with 120 spacing?

Shell is the same. >> Yes, I would like to add, ALL SHELL are SAME from 1960 non Record scripted high(large) flange hubs to mid 70's ones. I am a crazy Reord hub collector, currently I have 3 pairs of older non scripted hubs, and 15 more pairs! I have not seen any chage in the SHELL for 28 years! They only changed shafts, and locking nuts/spacers for 5,6, and 7 speeds. So, I can not agree with following comment.

<<Rob's reply: Actually, they aren't. The flange to flange difference

between this campy hub (dated 1965 by the lock nut date) and a

somewhat newer (mid 70s) campy high flange is distinct and

we would have to defenestrate the notion I think many of us

hold closely that Campy paid attention to the details. The

flange to flange difference is what first led me to think

I might be able to fit an ultra 6 on the newer hub even

with 120 spacing. The wheel on the Cinelli right now appears

to have very little dish to it at all. Something I chalked up

to the wider flange to flange dimension. >>
