I can at least answer this part of your inquiry. Yes, titanium's weight is roughly about half way between the weight of aluminum and steel.

I remember checking out a pair of these pedals that were a salesman's sample back in '73 or '74, and I think, but am not certain, that they were all aluminum (except spindle, bearings and races of course). Like now, I wished I could afford to purchase them, but couldn't.
