In the tradition of modern classics, I have just revised
my Rivendell Audax. This bike was built for centerpull brakes and has a TA
bag support rack. The fun part was moving the Lumotec lamp from the bars
to the rack using a wine cork as the method of clamping. This
has so far proven stable and reliable, plus it adds a bit of
Riv make-do-make-right panache as I see it, though it is not
to everyone's taste, I am sure. The idea was to build
a long distance rider that is essentially bullet proof
insofar as these are parts that have never failed me, ever.
The bike has Honjo fenders and uses Pasela 28s to fit beneath them; also TA Zephyr triple
(49x38x26) with a Mavic 862 mtn rear, Mavic front der., Simplex
retrofrctions (last generation Mavics), Mafac
gumhood levers and Racer brakes with Mathauser pads (can you say
STOP!!), Schmidt front hub with Lumotec, grey B17, Nitto post (gosh,
I LOVE Nitto posts, can this be done better?), Nitto Rando bars,
Riv lugged stem. The bars have white cotton tape smeared with
fireplace ashes and the shellaced with amber and then clear
shellac. Floats my boat. Phil bb: no other compares, like
the Maxicar rear hub.
