Subject: [CR]Rear dropouts

Can someone shed some light on the "generally accepted" position for where the rear axle should be placed in horizontal rear dropouts? I always thought the axle should be placed in line with the centerline of the seatstays or just slightly in front of that line, but at Cirque, I saw many bikes with the axle forward to almost the edge of the dropout. Given that there were adjustment screws that had positioned those axles in most of those dropouts, I have to conclude that someone must think that is where they should be. My older bikes have longer chainstays and I can understand that moving the wheel forward would effectively change the handling. But, with my more modern (since early 80s) bikes, I've noticed that the tire will almost touch the seattube if pushed to the forward edge. What are your thoughts on this topic? Lou Deeter, Orlando FL
