The drilling started earlier than the '72 hour record. When 'big Ted' rode the last stage of the '69 tour he had roughly 10 quarter-inch holes drilled in the front of each campy brake lever (I don't have a good picture of the crank).

Also, in another '70-or-so issue of BICYCLING! there's a review of the Masi Gran Criterium, which shows that it was provided from the factory with the inner webs removed from the big ring. The big ring also has the Swiss-cheese treatment: one large hole on each attaching tab, two medium holes above each of those, and 9 small holes across to the next tab. The article credits Masi Junior (Alberto) with the drilling and milling idea.
