Another fact not yet discussed is that some colors of Campy hoods seem to last better than others.

White hoods seem to last longest, followed by Black hoods, and in a distant third, Gum hoods. The deterioration problem is caused by the rubber materials used at that time. Different colors used various chemical formulas to enable the hood colorations.

There are other synthetic rubber materials now available that seem to last forever without deterioration. This is discussed in recent issues of VW Trends magazine that say users should stay away from the original NOS (New Old Stock) automotive rubber parts that will deteriorate in favor of new synthetic compounds.

The real questions that need to be asked are which synthetic rubber is best for the cyclists purpose, how safe is the material, and if molds are created - how effectively can the synthetic rubber compound be used with the recreated molds?

Are there any injection mold engineers out there who could comment?
