One my cycling sins of commission was to replace the beautiful Stronglight cottered chainset on my 1950's (?) Hetchins with an ugly cotterless one! I really don't think I improved its (the bicycle's) appearance by updating the components. In retrospect I wish I had just renovated it the way it was with all the original equipment that came with it. I had purchased the bicycle from a mate at boarding school for five pounds and didn't know what I had. Can you believe I just threw the old stuff away! Of course this was in the 1970's when we thought wearing polyester suits with bell bottoms was the ultimate in cool! I ultimately gave the frame away; hopefully that regained me some good karma! Someone just gave me an old ten speed Raleigh Sprite and I am not going to change a thing on it even though it is a singularly prosaic machine. Oh, by the way, I hope it is acceptable to use British terminology (chainset, mudguards, tyres etc.) on the list! ;-) Lawrence Bradley (Tacoma, WA but a "Kentish Man" at heart)
