I've had a few of the very early 49 cranks. I have one from about 1950 on my touring bike. I've noticed the following differences: 1.Engraved is only, "49 170" on the inside of my earliest crank. I've also seen 49 A and 49 D on later cranks, but I don't remember exact years. And I'm not sure what they represent. Unless it is the taper, see difference #2>>> 2.The taper is different from later 49s. I tried putting a 1970s Mod 49 on a 1950 bike and the chain line was so bad that the chain fell. 3.On the front side, it only says, "Stronglight Depose." The word "MARQUEE" is omitted. I think they added Marquee in mid to late 50s. 4.Earliest 49s used pin-hole dust caps, while later models used screw driver slotted caps. I think this changed in the early 50s because most people had no pin-tools. 5. Chainrings were more art decco looking and with massive cut-outs.

Happy Bastille Day
