I guess I've been lucky over the years and have had few meetings with angry motorists , on two occasions I was able to catch up with then and ask what it was I did to piss them off ,they drove away .
In the 60's Owen Mullholland and I put in many miles together , we both lived in the Haight Ashbury district in San Francisco , he was in school , I worked nights and tried to be a bike racer during the day .
On one of our week day training rides we decided to ride to Marin County , a quick ride over the Golden Gate Bridge , which you were supposed to walk your bike over , and down to Sausalito , Marin County was ours .
We decided to ride to Fairfax and then over the back side of Mt.Tamilpias , our route took us over Corte Madera Grade , a neat little hill with lot's of tight turns , the top of the Grade was considered the same as a city limit sign and always called for a sprint . We got to the top at the same time and Owen dropped me on the decent , I just couldn't do the turns at the speed he could . I figured I would catch him on the flat road into Larkspur .
When I finally caught him , an angry motorist had him by the throat on the hood of his car , as soon as Owen saw me he started yelling "your going to die now mister" the guy's wife started yelling "get in the car honey they're going kill you" , I started to say some thing cool , but I thought the whole seen was so hilarious I broke out laughing .
The motorist got in his car and sped away , we continued our ride , I never did get the whole story out of Owen , I think he thought I was closer than I was and felt safe to argue with the guy .Owen was riding a early 60's Paramount and I was riding a 63 Cinelli at the time .
