Since I think that travel to cities that include CR-type destinations is on topic I will respond. Though this may just be a warning based on personal experience. (I did not respond to Dale's Bay Area request because I figured that lots of more qualified people would have contributed.)

There's Collins which I used to respect until...they tried to restore my brother's old Gianni Motta and in rebuilding the rear wheel they installed a new, too wide axle/nut set up that caused the dropout to crack. I checked it out personally and it is clear that they screwed up. I used to borrow that wheel for racing on rough roads and the spacing was narrower prior to their "repair". But having worked at shops I know that not every Wrench that picks up a repair has the same level of knowledge or competence. (Is that a rant?). The Motta is resting in my Bike Room and making a full recovery to '85 status with the help of a torch and a Super Record group.

<<<Anyone got a set of Gianni Motta rear drop outs???>>>

There is Paul's, they're pretty cool. Only problem is that they keep all the good stuff behind the counter! Didn't we all!

According to my brother, you can hang out near the University and check out the bums. Once in a while you can catch an old Colnago or Paramount under the spray paint. (If you look carefully across that street you can still see the frat boy looking for his bike!)

On the bright side you may be able to check out the gang at Co-Motion. One foot in the door and you're surrounded by mitres and jigs. Not that it is retro, but it is certainly quality steel a la Serotta etc.

There is a "repair collective" I think on the north side, and every once in a while my brother finds a nice Campy ((Campag?) Campagnolo) part.

Most importantly, the riding can be epic.
