Some were also sold at the low end shops - the ones that also did lawnmower repair and made keys. We had one like that in the town where I attended high school. The owner evidently had a history of not paying bills and none of the big bike manfacturers would deal with him, but he was selling French-made "Polar" bikes - evidently the US distributors had pretty lax credit standards. One of my high-school classmates bought one, actually not a terrible bike, about equivalent to a lower end Jeunet. No telling who actually made marques like these, some may have been made by perfectly reputable smaller french shops and marked with whatever name the US importer fancied.
