Journalists -- both TV and press -- are more ratings-conscious than accuracy-conscious. They think that if they can pump up the coverage, more people will pay attention. There's actually a word I'm thinking of, but I figure it's not appropriate for the list. Slang for someone who sells himself, if you know what I mean.

Shrug.
