I may have solved my own problem. But could still use some advice.

I see that I can get a 68 SS 114.5 spindle at Bicycle Classics Inc. - I assume that this should work fine with the cups that I have and solve my problems with fitting a late SR crankset onto an earlier NR BB?

Of course, if anyone is willing to trade spindles, a 68-SS-120 for a 68 SS, I am still open to offers. Thanks Tom for pointing out the potential problem!
