Just my own speculation Monkeydude, but perhaps in the 70's and 80's it was hard for any non-Campy part to compete with Campy unless it was significantly cheaper. The King was not. When MTBs came around and some of the gear bled over to the road, people started to be a bit more open-minded about expensive non-campy stuff. Credit the converted MTB people who brought this attitude to the road? In the early 90's it was to the point where anything Campy or Shimano wasn't Gucci enough, especially for the MTB folks. I'd say the King headset fits this pattern. They were very rare before WTB brought them out as their Grease Guard headset, then they became the "BEST" MTB headest. Soon, people started using the regular Kings on ATBs and ultimately on the road. Very, very good headsets, from what I hear. Unlike the nice cartridge units from brand S, they are available threadless. S is silly to not offer threadless, really silly. I started using them in the early 90's and find them vastly superior to standard headsets. Why didn't they become popular 20 years ago? enjoy, Brandon"monkeyman"Ives SB, CA _______________________________________________
