<<I have a 1970 Paramount track bicycle which is complete except for a rear wheel. I also own a 1970 Paramount road bike. Both bikes have 120mm rear axle spacing.
My question is whether I could put my road wheel, which has a 5 speed cluster, on the back of the track bike for an occasional ride
I know I need to eventually acquire the right rear wheel for the track bike. Meanwhile I would like to enjoy it. Has anyone tried the option I'm suggesting?>>
Sure. Do you want to freewheel (just leave the freewheel in place, and install a chain to fit around the cog of your choice), or do you want the gear fixed? Cool trick: English BB lockring = English hub threads, so, if you get yourself a track cog, you can use a BB ring to lock it onto the hub (you have to lock a fixed cog in order that you can apply reverse pressure for slowing). For powerful riding, the QR may not tighten down sufficiently, but it should be more than acceptable for cruising.
