See this previous posting from June ;

---------------- In support of Stuart I have to add that it was once commonplace to use "heavy" oil on a maintenance basis between strip down and re-grease. Following my Dad's example in the 60's I ended up using some from his spare bottle of (manual) gearbox oil (Castrol EP?) lying in the garage - but then you only neeeded to add a few drops to each bearing set (Cycling Manual quotes a few drops every 250 miles and an annual strip down and re-grease). Thankfully Tecalemit nipples made it all the more easy and stopped most of the oil coming back out from where it was put in. Providing you stuck to few drops (or should that be squirts) and didn't overdo it and leave your bike on it's side for too long, none would leak anywhere. -----------------

to which I've added ;

The trick was to squirt in a few drops of oil using a Tecalemit injector, then lean the bike to the left and right to get the oil to both sides. I've been reliably ? informed - and it make sense, that only those bearing sets most susceptible to problems - the bottom headset bearing, and the left hand crank bearing really needed the the grease livened up a bit using oil, hence the nipples at these point only.......Anyone who strips down a bike used - and I mean used, in our inclement weather or during winter time will know exactly what I mean......Never wonder why you end up with rusty brown bearings on the crank side of the bracket, and the lower headrace set.....

Tecalemit injectors come up infrequently on e-bay !

A few lightweight manufacturers did use "Grease" nipples, but that's another long story.......
