Grant's message brings to mind how little it once cost to spruce up your race bike for a new season. Of course it always felt like big bucks at the time, and each of those bucks was worth more than it is now, but comparing 70's / 80's prices for common items to current collector's market prices is revealing. For 70's and 80's stuff, it is the common wear-related items that are commanding big dollars. Consider current prices on these NOS items that we once replaced routinely: Clement criteriums, Vittoria CXs, etc SR headsets Campy hoods Binda Extras Cinelli, Selle Italia seats The question is, once you adjust for inflation, are these items really much more expensive NOS than they were when new? It is also interesting to compare the prices of super-expensive NOS items to current top of the line items. Sure NOS SR cranks are expensive but current top-of-the-line Campy cranks are $800! Seats, posts, BBs, Bars, Stem, FWs; pedals all go over $200 for the current "best stuff". Tom Dalton Bethlehem, PA
