In Italy it is also very common to have the rear brake set up to the left. Such preferences obviously have nothing to do with the side of the road that you ride on. Most older Italian frames with non-central cable braze-ons for the rear brake have them on the left side. This would seem to point to them being set up for the rear brake on the left. I have 2 bikes (an old Bianchi from the 30's and a recent ex pro-ridden De Rosa) with the rear on the left. All the rest have the rear on the right. As long as the brakes are set up correctly, I don't have any problems switching back and forth between the two. It takes perhaps one or two touches of the brakes and I remember for the rest of the ride.
