I have been offered a bike built by a small Italian builder, Marrello, equipped with the complete Campagnolo 50th Anniversary gruppo. I am not terribly interested in the frame, even though built with Columbus tubing because it is slightly too small for me, but am very interested in the gruppo. Since the fellow with the bike is a friend of a friend, I woud like to give him a fair price. My question therefore is: What would a fair price be for the used gruppo alone? Given that I would need to pick it up in Italy and transport back to the US, is $1000 fair? I have seen one new gruppo in the suitcase that will go on auction in September with an estimate of $4-5,000 (see lot 6003 of the auction listed at http://ebay.com/
Any help in determining a fair price is welcome.
On a further note, for anybody wanting to go to the Eroica ride in Italy at the end of September, you may want to go to one of the best Italian swap meets that takes place the weekend before. Although the prices are a bit higher here than at other meets because it attracts so many foreigners, it does usually have some nice things. It is held at the Imola Formula one race track. Be forewarned!!! You must be prepared to do a lot of walking, as the swap meet combines bicycles, motorcycles and cars and is pread over the full length of the track. The organisers provide a little shuttle train every so many minutes, but it still is quite a hike. To learn more, look at their web site: http://www.mostrascambioimola.it/
