I've got a Drysdale pursuit bike from 1939 which got a custom lacquer over chrome finish in 1949.There is boxes over the lacquered main triangle,and the fork and stays are bare chrome with lining on them.At this point,I just rub a flannel up and down the chrome as if it were silver...
