The reason for the oilhole in the shell is so you don't have to partially disassemble the rear of the bike to lube the hub. After I've overhauled a S-A hub I'll lay it on it's side and lube the hub from the axle end. Centrifugal force will spread the oil through the hub after the oil flows out of the axle key window. Personally I prefer to use the shell oilhole for maintenance if I can. If you have a hub with the ballcap oiler port I think you can still get an oiler to use on this fitting from the better hardware store.
