According to the experts I asked at 'Schwinn School' in the early 1970's while Iwas attending, the 72-hole hubs came about because Schwinn discovered thet the beveling (chamfering) of the spoke holes they performed made a strength compromise. They then drilled a new set of holes without chamfering and left the original holes (what else could they do with these holes?) for 'lightening.'
