Maxi-Car hubs:

I was told around 1947 for the smooth flanges (not stepped riveted). No idea how many holes for pin tools there were over the years.

Overhaul is rarely needed. M. Csuka of Singer has his original 1950 hubs on his main bike, and he used to ride 14,000 km a year. However, if they are rough and don't improve after a short ride, here is how:

1. One side has two locknuts backed against each other. Remove these. 2. Remove dustcap. 3. Same with single spacer nut and dustcap on other side.

From here, I am quoting from memory, and I have done it only once: 4. There are more labyrinth seals in there. I don't remember how, but it was obvious how to remove them. Be careful not to distort the thin metal seals. 5. At some point, you drive out the axle by placing the hub flanges on the sides of a vise (with something to protect the finish). I think it is here that you can distort the seals. 6. Then you get to the bearings. The races slide on the axle on one side (it's not a cone, but a special grooved bearing). The other side is a cup that is pressed in.

I am told the bearings are a standard, but very expensive SKF item. I never had to replace any. The brass retainer for the balls is a work of art (at least on the 1950s front hub I took apart).

Enjoy.
