Having picked up a old Everest colored chain (side plates blue) from a good
ebay seller, I installed it on my DeRosa and within two weeks) was having
shifting problems. The chain would twist and lay in slightly sideways
betweem the freewheel cogs on its way to the next cog. The crank would just
freewheel spin until the chain finally moved onto the intended cog. I
removed the chain and was suprised to see that it had already lost major
lateral stiffness. You could twist it around like a boiled noodle. No need
for any more boiled noodles over here, I threw on the old chain and the
shifting was back to normal. The blue chain looked cool matching the frame
color. Maybe great for a show bike, but a no way for a rider. Can`t
believe a chain could go bad so quickly? Everest generally poor quality?
The old box it came in says something about Teflon on it. Maybe there were
some teflon bushings or something in there that my soaking in kerosene to
remove the packing grease dissolved? Anyway, the chain looks cool back in
it`s box now.
