Dutch. Manufacturer of mopeds, too, as I recall, like Motobecane. Quality of race models comparable to mid-high Raleighs -- cleaner lugs, and better paint than typical Froggie and Italian bikes. Low zoot factor compared to well known Italian bikes, but definitely competent, professional, peloton-quality bikes. Ridden to plenty of golds.
Batavus still makes a full range of bikes -- lots of full-chainguard/fender town bikes. If the price and components were right, the relative obscurity of the marque in the US would attract me to own one. I'd like the wheels from the one in question, please. (Seriously.)
