I used an old Cannondale underseat bag (with the 'wimpy' nylon strap) to carry an additional spare tubie in the 1970's (the 'wimpy' nylon strap - along with the Cannondale tire bag it's part of - is **still** in use, residing now on an early-mid 1980's Nishiki Prestige ...also still in daily use is a Cannondale rack bag purchased at the same time, held to the rack by 'wimpy' velcro ...good stuff that, now past the 25 year old mark, still going strong ...though admittedly the bag is rather shockingly road stained) ....however, somewhat out of the specified time period.
I had one of the VAR rubber band thingies back then, and it was the primary reason I purchased the Cannondale bag. (Can't quite remember anymore, but I think I was able to finagle two Hutchinson Sprint "spares" tubies into that bag ...doesn't hardly look big enough now.)
