In the British Isles when the Time Trialling season has finished, most clubs run hillclimb events always in the late Autumn (fall) these are basically sprints up a hill against the clock, lasting anything from 2 to 6 minutes on average, depending on length and severity of the climb. For many years most people rode track bikes on fixed wheel for these events, it wasn't until the mid 1960's approximately that gears were more commonly used. The Jack Taylor curved tube road path model was very popular for this type of racing in the late 50's to the early 60's. It also found favour with grass track riders in this period as well. At this years Mildenhall rally near the USAF base there were two riders racing on the grass with Curved Tube Taylors of this era as well as several Hetchins, one Ephgrave and a Hobbs Blue Ribband. Our National Hill Climb Championship is still a big event with a large entry.
