Suggestion # 1 ,

Give up on the front derailleur idea and sell the frame immediately ( did you say it just happens to be my size - 24 inch ?? ) .

Suggestion # 2 ,

Use a double chainring with no front derailleur . Seriously . Talk with somebody who uses a "flip-flop" rear wheel ( VERY popular with "single-speed" bicycles right now ) . Stopping at the base of the hill to turn your rear wheel around ( or at the peak of the mountain pass , as Tulio Campagnolo once did . . . ) , is considered no big deal .

So , stopping to plop the chain onto a second chainring should be NO problem !

Besides , you CAN do it without stopping , with your right toe , especially if there is no front derailleur in your way !

It's simply one more opportunity to develop , and to hone , a new skill !

Happy Trails , Raoul Delmare Marysville Kansas

P. S. Suggestion # 3 ,

Get an old Campagnolo , or Simplex , inexpensive derailleur which uses a horizontal rod to move that front cage . Since you can rotate the cage any way you like , on the rod , the angle of the seat tube has no lasting affect on the cage angle ( of course it may still be too far forward ) !
