A kickstand would have been helpful in my first bike race.

It was put on by the organizers of my town's tricentennial celebration. They had never seen or even heard of bike racing I think - I think they thought they invented it! Before the start the referee said "OK everyone put your bike on its kickstand over here on this side of the road, then we'll line up over here, and run to your bikes when I say Go". Being the only one with no kickstand, I had to lay my bike on its side. Running across the road in my TA Anquetil cleats was a bit dicey. I won of course, but in my defense let me say I was 13 years old and racing against everyone under some age, I think it was 25, a field of maybe 30 riders. I was the youngest in the race. My dad won the only other race, for the old geezers over 25; he was 45. Still to this day his only bike race, so he is undefeated. Our matching trophies are about two feet tall.

Obligatory on-topic stuff: The bike I rode was a 1967 Jaubert, an entry-level French 10 speed that we bought new for $49 - the only one I've ever seen - anyone else ever heard of them? My dad's racer was a well-worn 1961 or '62 Peugeot, model name unknown but precursor to the UO-8 I think. It had wingnuts not QRs, but nice chrome forks and stays, nice leather saddle, a steel (pre-Delrin) Simplex rear derailleur and probably the cast metal pushrod front (though I don't remember for sure). Wish we'd kept it original of course.
