Stronglight 49D were manufactured for a very long time and were known in the trade as "the original old faithfulls".I have witnessed many Campagnolo crank breakages can't ever remember seeing or hearing of a 49D failure. There use to be a giant American knicknamed the Trapper who rode with the Bristol CTC and Cleeveden in the mid 70's who snapped Campag cranks with alarming regularity, in the end Overbury's got so fed up replacing them they kitted his bikes out with 49D or TA cranks. Trapper was a glaciologist a very strange job for Bristol, perhaps he was connected to the university. Sadly he got tragically killed in a avalanche, he was great fun to cycle and drink with.
