I'm not sure who started this nomenclature -- it's nothing new in the
American firearms industry. A Remington (they've been around since before
the bicycle) 700-ADL is an entry rifle, you'd want a 700-BDL (assuming you'd
want a rifle). Calling your best the A-model leaves no room for improvement;
but, a better C-Model can always be up-named to D, and so on. It seems
logical to me.
