CR FOLK:
Universal CX brakes predate 1977. The May '77 BICYCLING! magazine has a Bikecology ad on page 75 announcing that they are having a sale on CX brakes: $64.88 a set. The ad says: "in the same league with campy". The distinctive features of the brake (conical nuts and implementation of quick release) are similar to the Zeus 2001 sidepull, which also originated circa 1976.
I tried to upload a scan of the ad to YAHOO! photos (along with a color side-view of Merckx in Fiat gear and a '78 picture of a Tommasini frame, but Yahoo issued a complaint about the file names and wouldn't upload. Maybe it's too shy to tell me that they're too big.

Rolf, I have a pair of calipers marked "mod.125". They are side pull, with quick releases, and came on a Torpado stocked with Campy N.G.S., I think from the late 70s.
