Thanks Thats about what I thought. Chain length certainly is critical. Thats one thing my brain had fogotten over the last 20 or so years. A freinfd of mine used one on a "tourer" (racing bike with panniers and lower gears) to go from perth to melbourne in oz in 74. I use a Campy NR. We did not cycle from kalgorlie to port pirie as the center was still gravel and we still used singles. My NR died in Tasmania after a collision with a spoke somewhat bent it! Twas replaced by a french thing. The zues carried on for many a year. I have one now on my motobecane grand jubilee. love it greatly but ... freewheels are a problem. /dlh
