As a supplement to my earlier post listing polishing products, I post this additional information supplied to me by a CR list member.

One distinction:

corrosive chemical content - versus - fine physical abrasiveness

The metal polishes are designed to chemically react with the metals. Plus, in addition to their chemical properties, they also have physical abrasives in them . Heaven only knows what their chemicals can or will do to paint. In the short term, probably nothing. But, the film that's left behind, over time, with some humidity . . . who knows ?

The metal polishes are NOT "rubbing compounds" !

"Rubbing compound" is something you buy to put a smooth final finish onto a painted surface . Automotive rubbing compounds are sold specifically for use on automotive paint !

"Rubbing compounds" are not metal polishes .

Simichromw, Blue Magic, Met-All, these are not "rubbing compounds". These are metal polishes. These all belong down in the same category with Flitz. Another brand, one that our grandparents would be familiar with, is Brasso .

These are metal polishes.
