Hello Yannis,

I originally copied the torque values from The Third Hand bike tools catalogue and posted the original torque values listing on the CR list on June 10, 2002. The website you mention copied my original CR post and apparently did not include my full message post.

In the post I also said: "All suggested values are expressed in Inch-Lbs (not sure of metric conversion). CAUTION - I am unsure whether these values vary depending on the part manufacturer or whether part is made of alloy or steel..."

Please note that some of the values you mention from the Barnett Bicycle Institute differ in torque from what I posted. The Barnett values are for Mountain bike and BMX bikes that tend to have many steel components and these values are not suitable for vintage alloy components because alloy parts break under stress.

Just a word to the wise, be careful not to over torque the bolts or you may go home more parts that you want to!

Regards, Steve Neago
