Indeed, any system that uses threads that get tightened as you pedal is inherently inferior to a splined system, if you ever need to unscrew the sprockets. Modern multispeed systems use only splined sprockets, though some very low-end bikes still have old-fashioned threaded hubs.

"Bte" is an abbreviation for "Brevete", "Patent". I'm not so sure about SGDG, I'll try to look it up in one of my good French dictionaries when I get home tonight.
