I use my NR rear derailleur with 7 speed freewheels and it works just fine. This is to be expected since 7 speed freewheels (at least Suntour) are the same width as standard spaced 6 speed freewheels of the NR era. If the cage spring is "tired" you could find it sluggish shifting to the small cog though!
