Dear list members:
Back when I had more time I would occasionally disassemble a freewheel, clean it up and use grease for reassembly. It worked pretty well but was very time-consuming.
More recently, I have been dumping my freewheel's into a pot of kerosene to clean them out. I remove them, let them dry and then toss them into a pot of motor oil, usually 10 W.-40. Let them sit in the motor oil overnight, remove and let the excess oil drip out on newspaper, reinstall on the bicycle and serve with a nice chablis and it seems I have a sometimes very quiet and usually smooth freewheel.
Even though it is only motor oil, it seems that the lubrication properties last for at least one year. Your mileage may vary.
