This is the illustration I referred to as erroneous. Seeing it again, after all these years, I now remember now that it is more vague than incorrect. Looking at it you would think the cupped washers nest together like spoons in a drawer. They really should be arranged so that the concave faces of are facing eachother. What you end up with is something that is linticular in profile, that is, it looks like a lens from the side. This squishy little package ends up working as a spring to keep tension along the shifter's axis.
