I've just finished the "steed" I'll be using on occasional commutes. 1950s Claud Butler fillet brazed with a mix of whatever I had lying around the bike shed. Campag/Fiamme wheels, Dia Compe centrepulls, straight bars, single 36-tooth front chainring and 13-21 on the back (I'm in no hurry and it's hilly on the way back!), Shimano Deore rear mech, thumbshifter, modern Bluemels mudguards and a great set of Sigma 5W/20W lights (I bought these specially and they're like car headlights).
Took this mongrel out last night for a shake-down ride and-surprise, surprise-it worked perfectly. What did I do right?
It will be used in anger for the first time tomorrow-22 mile round trip-unless it buckets down (which it probably will).
