Marty asked: "Hi list, I have a 1970 French thread Campagnola Neuvo Record rear hub, with no markings on the hub to tell me it is French....On older Campagnola rear hubs is there a marking method or code when no numbers or BSC, Italian, French IS NOT ENGRAVED ON THE hub body? The method I used to make an educated guess on my 1970 hub was it is a Gitane-French with French pedal threads and only a French freewheel would thread on.....A friend mentioned a subtle coding consisting of a mark = X, two marks = Y and no mark = Z .
In my 2nd edition Sutherland's (undated, but p. 4-2), hub markings for freewheel "nationality" are only given for Zeus hubs. This is on the page with the markings on the freewheels; I found no more info in the section on hubs. I conclude -- and this matches my dim memories -- that the 1960s Campy hubs did not have any markings to tell which thread type it was.
Which leads to the sad story of a very large group ride up one of the Cascades passes about 1971. One poor rider had is freewheel just grind the threads off his Campy record hub. It seems to have been a British or Italian FW threaded onto french-threaded hub. Near the top of the pass, he pushed hard once too often, I guess...
